Kraut - Adjustment to Society

I first heard this band on a mixed tape given to me by my buddy in college. The tape included bands like Bad Brains, Wasted Youth, Minor Threat, Reagan Youth, Cro-Mags, Gang Green, Husker Du, Code of Honor and of course Kraut. The mixed tape was a killer, every song rocks (well, you can't fail with that line-up). I still have the cassette with me - thanks a lot bro!

Here's the Maximum Rock n Roll review I snagged from KFTH:

A potent mixture of '77-style powerchord punk and more contemporary thrashers can be found on this excellent debut album by KRAUT. It is far more riveting than their two EPs, and should serve to silence many of their critics once and for all. Solid production, loads of tight guitar power, abundant energy, and huge hooklines are all showcased here. I don't really accept Tim Sommer's suggestion that KRAUT are the punk group of the '80s, and for all I know, they might actually be the would-be rockstars that their enemies contend, but they sure as hell won't need ex-PISTOL Steve Jones to give them credibility next time around. Highly recommended.

Good Riddance - Coverups

This is a re-up from Good Riddance's all covers album aptly named Coverups. The artists covered here are varied from the punk staples such as Black Flag to Battalion of Saints, to Government Issue and Chron Gen. There's a really good cover of the Shangrila's classic the "Leader of tha Pack" plus a Kiss number "I Stole Your Love."

Here's what AMG has to say about the album:

"Cover Ups has California punks Good Riddance doing ten cover songs: "Melt With You" by Modern English, "Feel Their Pain" by Insted, "I Stole Your Love" by Kiss, "Second Coming" by Battalion of Saints, "Come Dancing" by the Kinks, "Outlaw" by Chron Gen, "Leader of the Pack" by the Shangri-Las, "Hall of Fame" by Government Issue, "In My Head" by the Psychedelic Furs, and "My War" by Black Flag.

Given that Good Riddance has been around for about 15 years, one can forgive them slightly for wanting to do a cover album, which are normally received with apprehension from fans and non-fans alike. Some of the tunes seemed marred by the band trying to be funny and instead being annoying (the snotty "na-na-na" chorus on "Melt With You," the high-pitched girly shrieking on "Leader of the Pack," etc.). Adding former Lifetime and Kid Dynamite drummer David Wagenschutz made Good Riddance a really tight apparatus on the rhythm end, and hopefully Wagenschutz's talent can bring some respect to the band as legitimate musicians (if that's something they care about, that is). Highlights of the album would no doubt be the Kiss cover and Bill Stevenson of Black Flag, All, and the Descendents doing drums and guitar on the Black Flag tune. To a larger degree, this cover album is similar to the entire school of cover albums: If you're a fan of the band and you like even just a few of the covers, you'll dig the album. If you like some of the songs but aren't much of a fan of the band, you'll be able to tolerate the songs. So the lesson is that cover albums are (in almost all cases) for fans only. Cover Ups is no exception."

the Methadones - 21st Century Power Pop Riot

One of those rare all-covers projects that actually works, the Methadones' 21st Century Power Pop Riot might well actually be the band's best album so far. That's no disrespect to leader Dan Schafer's earlier work, which has been uniformly fine pop-punk, but this set is the first album Schafer has been involved with since his glory days as Ben Weasel's right-hand man in Screeching Weasel (under the name Danny Vapid) that's been this much unabashed fun. It helps immensely that the song selection is spot-on throughout, highlighting forgotten gems and lesser-known cult classics instead of the usual suspects: when the Records' "Starry Eyes" and Scandal's "Goodbye to You" (featuring a kicky lead vocal by Annie Soviette of the Soviettes) are among the most instantly familiar tunes on the album, it's clear that true power pop fans were behind this record. Versions of Elvis Costello's "Welcome to the Working Week" and, even better, the 1979 Costello soundalike "Back of My Hand" by the Jags are instant highlights, with a rockabilly-tinged workout on Nick Lowe's "Heart of the City" and a dead-on resurrection of the Pointed Sticks' "Out of Luck" close behind. Hoodoo Gurus - Stoneage Romeos

There were only quite a few songs I like upon hearing them the first time - Mommy's Little Monster, The Legend of Pat Brown, Thirteen, Protest & Survive, Hell's Around the Next Corner, Revenge. Though most songs on my list are either punk or hardcore except the Big Star song, there's another one that I liked when I first heard it - My Girl by Hoodoo Gurus. Hoodoo Gurus is an Australian power pop band and Stoneage Romeos was their debut album & it includes the song My Girl. The said song was played several times in a local radio station WXB 102.7 during the 80's. And I was so impressed by the group's pop hooks that I really got to have the album, which I did. I wasn't disappointed with the album either, which is a mix gargage rock, rockabilly, British Invasion and full-on rock n' roll. If you like good music, you shouldn't miss this one.

Decry - Symptoms of Hate

I'm going to open November with a bang. Bang, in this case, the three releases of Decry. They're a hardcore band from Southern California which churns out very good, tight hardcore music. Symptoms of Hate is a 4 song EP with a some very tight playing. They got even better with the release of their Falling LP.

Decry - Falling

This is their first full-length album after the Symptoms of Hate 7" and was released in 1984. It has some powerful songs in it, not as fast as others but sure damn powerful. I've been listening to Decry for the past week now and can't seem to let go.

Decry - Japanese MLP

This record, if my memory serves me right, was already posted by Slobo's Only In It For the Music's first incarnation. In case you missed out on that here it is again. This record is more of a rock record than their Falling LP. And for that reason, many fans were alienated. To tell you honestly, when I first heard it I was very pissed off and hated the album so much. I'm crying sell out. When I listened to it again many years later, it's not actually bad at all. In fact I enjoy listening to it. Taste surely changes over time.

The Jim Morrison's lyrics was always been dark and brooding but overshadowed by their excellent pop sensibilities. From the Oedipal Complex theme of The End to serial killing in Riders on the Storm, there's always a dark shadow looming behind their music. Wire - Live at the CBGBs

"By the time Wire made it to America for a mini-residency at New York's CBGB in July 1978, punk was dead and the band was moving in a radically different musical direction. The material featured here is an abridged version of a set recorded before a small audience (not at CBGB itself but in a nearby space) for broadcast on local station WPIX. Since American audiences had never seen Wire, the band uncharacteristically reprised some Pink Flag tracks. However, most of the songs come from Chairs Missing and explore exciting new territory, particularly the jagged exercises in creepy surrealism "From the Nursery" and "Practice Makes Perfect." Scant live evidence of Wire's exhilarating early phase exists; these recordings start to fill that gap, providing a vivid, fleeting snapshot of a group whose natural state was constant change." from ALLMUSICGUIDE

This actually a double post for the Pixies. This recording was from 2005 after the Pixes reformed. It's recorded in Newport. I don't know about you but for me, I find it hard to believe that the Pixies would go acoustic though a lot harder and less talented bands actually did it.

Sorry for the once again delayed post, blame it on the freaking Spyware that hit me recently. It affected the taskmanager, hijacked Rapidshare & Mediafire and made my connection really slow making uploading almost impossible. But the thing is I didn't want to reformat my PC so I slaved for a couple of weeks trying to fix it. Whew, I'm glad I fixed it though there's still issues on uploading but I can manage.

Enough about that, I love the Pixies and I've been dying to post these records for a long time now. First up is their legendary demo - the Purple Album. It's nice to hear this one because it's very interesting to hear the songs I love in their infancy stage and how it evolved to the songs we came to know and love. Case in point - 'Here Comes Your Man,' the version here is way different than what was on Doolittle.

All in all, the record is a great glimpse on a band that's quickly rising to "stardom."

Rhino Records DIY Series

I've been listening to a lot of power pop lately and I thought that I upload the power pop volumes of Rhino's DIY Series since I've already uploaded the punk volumes months ago. But since those links are already dead, I might as well upload the whole set altogether - ALL THE 9 VOLUMES!!!

The DIY Series is one of the best compilations ever. It covered both the roots of both punk and power pop. And it's divided geographically which makes you feel that you were there at that given time and place.

Though there are artists that should have been included - case in point, the Clash. Though I heard that it was between the Clash's label and Rhino and it's not in anyway the fault of the Clash. Rhino really wanted the Clash to be included but negotiations fell apart.

Anyways, this is a goldmine so get it while it's hot!!!

To tell you honestly, I have no information about this record but it's a damn good compilation! Though I wish Dead Set on Destruction was included here. But that's always the case with "Best of..." compilations, there's always one or two songs that "should be included."

But enough about that, this is a fine collection and a must-have for all the die-hard fans. And for those who are "new" to Husker Du's music, this is a great start, then back track to all their records.

The Oppressed - Oi! Singles & Rarities

The Oppressed, known as the Anti Fascist Oi was formed in Cardiff, Wales in 1981. Members of the band are very much into politics especially their singer Roddy Moreno, who is an advocate of SHARP (Skinheads Against Racial Prejudice). Their anti-fascist, racist stance is always embedded in their music, which is always a good combination.

Toxic Reasons was formed in Dayton, Ohio way back in 1979. This is their debut album reissued by Beer City. I actually screwed up in ripping the CD, instead of Shape of Things to Come, I mistakenly encoded Journey to the Center of the Earth (I was probably thinking of the excellent cover by the Ramones). Though, Shape of Things to Come is not listed.

Anyways, mistakes and all, this is a classic and everyone should have this. Enjoy!

Throw is Al Dimalanta's project after Dead Ends. In case you don't know Dead Ends, they are a Punk/Hardcore band in the Philippines. They released 4 albums in the Twisted Red Cross label.

This is Throw's second album and it continued the what the first album has left off. Hard and fast, these two words always comes to mind whenever I play it. Give it a shot, you won't be disappointed!

Today's posts includes five live recordings, starting off with a classic one from the the criminally overlooked band the Kinks. I had this one on a double LP vinyl way back. Unfortunately, I did not take of it and it's all scratched up and had to throw it away, stupid me. Anyways, I got the CD reissue and had to contend with it.

I've been contemplating of posting this one for a long time since I bought it about 3 months ago but a bit hesitant since it's way off the "alley." I finally got the balls to post it and it really feels good. Anyway, it's only rock n' roll!

Fugazi - Stage Dive Masters

This is a bootleg recording from the seminal DC band Fugazi. I think, this was part of the official bootleg series released by the band. I could be wrong, though I would love to get my hands on those 30+ volumes.

The recording itself is very descent for a bootleg, though the drums were pretty much "at the back" if you know what I mean. I can still remember downloading bootleg recordings from their Official Website. I downloaded their Peel Sessions and I'm tracking it down since I forgot where I backed it up. And there was this time where I'm on a steady diet of Fugazi. Though I must admit that I was less thrilled with their latter recordings. It became very experimental for my taste.

Anyways, this is a fine recording and a must have for any Fugazi fans and non-fans as well.

Killing Joke - Love Like Blood Live

Rockaplast, Germany on August 17 1985. This was the venue and the date of this recording. This was actually released under another title called ‘No Way Out But Forward Go.’ Among their live recordings, this is, in my opinion their best. With songs like The Wait, Kings & Queens, Tabazan, Eighties, Requiem and the title track. But the tracklisting for the last two songs were interchanged, instead of Chessboards, it says Adorations and vice-versa. But for the fans of Killing Joke like me, who gives a shit!

This is a great live album, download it and tell me if I'm lying.

Social Distortion - Live at the Roxy

I love Social Distortion, so this record means a lot to me. This is their first record after moving out of Epic Records and into an indie label Time Bomb. This is a blistering set of something old (1945, Another State of Mind), something new (I Was Wrong), something borrowed (Under My Thumb) and something blue (Ring of Fire, sumthin' borrowed too, hehe). This record shows how these guys mature from years of touring and playing just about anywhere.

This was the final recording of Dennis Danell w/ the band before his untimely death due to brain aneurysm. It also featured Chuck Biscuits on drums, a one-time DOA drummer and a long-time Samhain, Danzig drummer.

Sisters of Mercy - Some Girls Wander by Mistake

Mike of This Are Music suggested this record when I did a Sisters of Mercy double post. I had to get me this record when he said it included an excellent Stooges cover. But the irony of it all was that Terrorizer, my friend and contributor has this for a year or so. He only told me about this after seeing the comment of Mike.

In case you don't know it yet, this is a compilation of early Sisters of Mercy materials. It's worth the wait. Thanks to Mike and Terrorizer!

March Violets - The Botanic Verses

The March Violets enjoyed some success here in the Philippines during the 80s when a local radio station WXB 102.7 FM included their song Deep in their playlist. WXB played an almost exclusive all-import music, from New Wave to Goth and later Punk and Hardcore.

But all of that changed when two of their songs were included in the John Hughes movie "Somekind of Wonderful." The songs were "Turn to the Sky" plus a very excellent cover of the Stones song "Miss Amanda Jones."

Anyways, Botanic Verses is a collection of their early singles. You can hear traces of their label mates Sisters of Mercy in their earlier works but that's actually a plus in my book.

"The male/female vocal dynamic was definitely one of the March Violets' strong points, and their most successful tracks push that hard, whether it's the more immediately radio friendly dance-rock fury of "Walk Into the Sun" or the murkier edge of "Children on Stun." Plenty of other winners surface throughout: the slow-then-fast dank funk of "Slow Drip Lizard," the wonderfully vicious "Radiant Boys," the blunt "1 2 I Love You." by Ned Raggett

The Beauty of Doubt - The Nothing

The Beauty of Doubt is a Pinoi Hardcore that really kicks ass. They had a chance to open for Vitamin X when the latter toured Manila and they can actually hold their own. Standing toe-to-toe with Vitamin X is no small feat. (These are the words of Fishbone from Bad Omen, another great Pinoi punk band who sold me this CD, because I wasn't able to watch the gig for personal reasons.)

But I believe every word Fishbone said after just "one listen" to the CD. There are only a few bands that are in my "one listen" wonders and The Beauty of Doubt is one of them!

Unrest - Imperial F.F.R.R.

Unrest's first full-length album. It continued the band's pop meanderings of their earlier singles and EPs. I best describe this release as Manic Pop Thrill. I totally enjoy listening to Unrest, and I don't think I'll ever get tired of listening to them.

Unrest - Perfect Teeth

One of the must-haves for any Indie scenesters. In my book, Unrest is up there with Sonic Youth, the Pixies, Butthole Surfers, Guided by Voices as Indie stalwarts.

Here's what Allmusic gotta say about Perfect Teeth:

Unrest's final and best album is both jangling and lush, and covers many styles of pop music. "Angel, I'll Walk You Home" is filled with pristine vocal harmonies, while "Cath Carroll" is flashy, thrashy punk-pop. "Light Command" is wistful and triumphant. "Breather X.O.X.O." is majestically melancholy, and "West Coast Love Affair" is breezy and tongue-in-cheek. Unrest's experimental and pop leanings come together with terrific success on Perfect Teeth, making it a high point in the band's too-brief recording career. by Heather Phares

Down By Law - Punkrockdays

I've been very busy lately and out-of-town most of the time that's hence the erratic posting. Anyways, I'm trying to compensate the irregularity the best that I can.

For my last post for this month I give you Down By Laws compilation Punkrockdays. I love DBL! My first introduction to DBL was Punkrockacademyfightsong which is a totally awesome record! A must have for punk rockers everywhere. In Punkrockdays, the band collected their singles and (non) hits. Until next time, enjoy!

Laziness is setting in again, so here's Allmusic's review of Road Rage

"One of the most intense hardcore-metal bands of the '90s was undoubtedly Pro-Pain -- a group that has ignited many a brutal mosh pit during its tenure. As a result, a live album seemed to be a fine fit. However, the group did not get around to issuing a live set until nearly a decade after its debut release (1992's metal cult classic Foul Taste of Freedom). But when 2001's Road Rage arrived, boy, did it ever pack a Mr. T-esque wallop. The 17-track album includes highlights from throughout Pro-Pain's career, including such scream-til-the-veins-on-your-neck-explode anthems as "Foul Taste of Freedom," "Iraqnophobia," "Stand Tall," and a song that Celine Dion should really consider covering someday, "The Stench of Piss." It may have taken a long time to rear its head, but Road Rage lives up to the explosive live shows Pro-Pain have put on for years."

"In the alternative metal and hardcore fields, bands come and go. Keeping a band together can be an uphill climb -- the music industry isn't for the faint of heart -- and it isn't uncommon for alt metal and hardcore combos to break up after only one or two albums. But Pro-Pain has been impressively durable. 2004 marked the band's 12th anniversary, and Pro-Pain celebrates that anniversary with the uncompromising Fistful of Hate. Anyone who expects the New Yorkers to soften their blows will be disappointed; with Fistful of Hate, they offer another dose of harsh, angry, pummeling alt metal/hardcore venom. This 2004 release doesn't point Pro-Pain in any new directions, and the disc is unlikely to win over anyone who isn't already a fan of their hammer-to-the-skull approach. But in terms of being focused and inspired, Fistful of Hate is a winner -- and it certainly won't make diehard followers think any less of them. So why does Pro-Pain's small but enthusiastic cult following continue to hold them in such high regard? The bottom line is that Pro-Pain is superior to a lot of the competition. There is no shortage of headbangers putting out this type of mosh music in the 21st century, but Fistful of Hate underscores the fact that Pro-Pain's seemingly tireless members are doing it with much more feeling and conviction -- their hooks are sharper, their writing is crisper, their lyrics are more memorable. That said, Fistful of Hate falls short of essential; for someone who already has several Pro-Pain CD's in his/her collection, owning this one isn't absolutely necessary. But again, Pro-Pain's admirers are an enthusiastic bunch, and they will find that Fistful of Hate -- although not quite essential -- is certainly a solid and heartfelt addition to their catalog."

Jon Spencer Blues Explosion - Orange

Jon Spencer's former bands Pussy Galore and Bosshog explored the dirty side of rock n' roll, raw and unadulterated. With his new project, the Blues Explosion, he ventured to a more structured songwriting. Though it's nowhere near a blues band as the name tries to imply but it's more akin with classic rock.

Orange reminded me of Jimi Hendrix's Are You Experienced? (oh I'm going to be hanged by Hendrix freaks on this one!), but with lesser guitar vituosity! Keith Morris even called them The Jon Spencer Experience in the Circle Jerks' album Oddities...

Give this shit a try because in my opinion this is their best work.

Shout out to Nonoy on this one!
