VA - Another Damned Seattle Compilation [Tribute to the Damned]

I’m sorry about the late posts and totally missed October but I’m too busy and lazy [whoa! that’s an oxymoron] at the same time. Busy doing a lot of father/husband stuff and lazy posting. Actually, I’ve already uploaded at least 10 records but I’m so tired lately to write something up.

Anyways, I’ll try to make up for that with this post. This a Seattle tribute to one of the best punk bands ever – the Damned!

The culprits here are the who’s who of the Seattle scene:

the Purdins – 1 of the 2
Young Fresh Fellows – Fan Club
Coffin Break – Love Song
Skin Yard – Machine Gun Etiquette
Gas Huffer – Suicide
the Accused – Neat Neat Neat
Love Battery – I Just Can’t Be Happy Today
Motorhoney – Psychomannia
Freak – Anti-Pope
Flop – Disco Man
Hammerbox – New Rose
Derelicts – Born to Kill
Gruntruck – Nasty
Mudhoney – Stab Your Back
The Posies – Smash It Up
Big Satan Inc. – Melody Lee
Whitey – Wait for the Blackout
Fastbacks – Hit or Miss
Young Fresh Fellows – Life Goes On

Enjoy!

VA - Homage: Tribute to the Descendents

Homage: a Tribute to the Descendents

The Descendents is one of the earliest hardcore bandsd from L.A. They have carved a niche in the hardcore history by writing “love songs” while everyone else are pissed with “everything around them.” Don’t get me wrong, they are one of the meanest, tightest groups ever, but they are not afraid to write and sing songs about girls, which was kind of considered taboo back in the day. Another band that comes to mind when it comes to not being afraid not to conform is Redd Kross. They did a cover of God Thunder while playing in CBGB’s with Circle Jerks & DOA (I think).

Enjoy!!!

VA - I Wanna be a Stooges: Tribute to the Stooges

I Wanna Be a Stooge: A Tribute to the Stooges

The Kings of Proto-Punk! They were the template for most punk bands and became the yardstick in which punk bands are measured. Bands like the Pistols and the Damned worshipped.

This is an international tribute, bands from Japan, Australia, UK and the US of A all paid their respects to the band that kick started a revolution.

I was very thankful to find this in the bargain bin of the local Tower Records. It’s a kickass record so grab ‘em now.

Gothic Tribute to the Doors (Darken My Fire)

"You know the day destroys the night, Night divides the day, Tried to run, Tried to hide, Break on through to the other side."

There's no better day to play that song than today, Halloween!

The Jim Morrison's lyrics was always been dark and brooding but overshadowed by their excellent pop sensibilities. From the Oedipal Complex theme of The End to serial killing in Riders on the Storm, there's always a dark shadow looming behind their music. Anyways, the culprits here are the who's who of Goth - Alien Sex Fiend, the Mission, Controlled Bleeding, Nosferatu, Mephisto Walz. Enjoy the weekend!

Tracklist:

The Mission - Love Me Two Times
Eating Crow - L.A. Woman
The Newlydeads - Hello, I Love You
Alien Sex Fiend - Five to One
The Electric Hellfire Club - Light My Fire
Spahn Ranch - Strange Days
Ex-Voto - Riders on the Storm
Mephisto Walz - Peace Frog
Eerie Von - The Spy
Rhea's Obsession - End of the Night
Controlled Bleeding - When the Music's Over
Nosferatu - People Are Strange
Rosetta Stone - The End

VA - Hard to Believe (a Kiss Tribute)

Kiss is one of the most loved/hated bands in the world. Hated because they literally invented corporate rock. But the bands included in this compilation know something - they love Kiss for all the right reasons, the music. That's why this compilation boasts some of the "best" bands ever compiled in a single project. Leading the pack is one of the biggest fans of Kiss, the Melvins plus a slew of other "top-rate" acts such as All, Chemical People, Bullet LaVolta, Skin Yard, the Instigators and Nirvana. So what are you waiting for? Grab it now!

Btw, it's not going to hurt you to leave comments, so please do so.

VA - Freedom of Choice

Freedom of Choice, a fund-raiser for the Planned Parenthood Federation of America, presents some of the genre's best songs and places them in the context of the alternative rock of the 90s. So, songs by the Human League, A Flock of Seagulls, Missing Persons and Soft Cell are covered by Chia Pet, It's OK, Erectus Monotone, and Finger, respectively. Add covers of pre-new wavers Elvis Costello by Mudhoney and Iggy Pop by Tiny Lights, and you've got the idea.

When this collection came out in 1992, it was probably a little early to be commemorating the 80s and call -- as the liner notes do -- the Go-Go's Charlotte Caffey and Devo's Gerald V. "new wave legends". The good news, however, is that unlike most compilation CDs, this one is surprisingly consistent.

Sonic Youth, perhaps the best-known alternative band on the compilation, turn in a fine dismantling of Plastic Bertrand's "Ca Plane Pour Moi" as do Yo La Tengo, who cover Blondie's best song, "Dreaming".

White Flag provide an effective, albeit unrecognizable, cover of Kate Bush's "Wuthering Heights" and the Muffs score with an upbeat version of Paul Collins' "Rock & Roll Girl".

More faithful to the originals are Mudhoney's take on Elvis Costello's "Pump it Up" and the Connells' rendition of Split Enz's "I Got You."

Ten years after the fact, this compilation remains an interesting relic, though it's telling that the bands of the 80s covered here are still remembered fondly, while the bands doing the covering are, but for a handful, mostly forgotten. - by epsteinsmutha

Tribute to Impetigo - Wizards of Gore

Impetigo is a death/grind/gore band from Illinois. They're one of the progenitors of 'gore'. I actually posted Ultimo & Horror of Zombies when I was still a contributor in my good friend's blog, Slobodan's Only In It For the Music. I'm just reposting the two just in case you missed it the first time. Plus, Here's a Tribute to Impetigo, the true wizards of gore! Enjoy!
