the Damned - Machine Gun Etiquette

The Damned - Machine Gun Etiquette

There’s much fuzz on what was the Damned’s best record ever – their debut Damned Damned Damned or this one, their third. Honestly, I am more partial with their debut but I totally enjoy Machine Gun as well. Anyways, I’m known to change my opinion regarding which is the best album of a particular band, but right now it is STILL Damned Damned Damned.

Machine Gun Etiquette boasts some of the Damned best songs ever – Love Song, the title track, Plan 9 Channel 7, Smash It Up, plus covers [MC5’s Looking at You, Sweet’s Ballroom Blitz and Jefferson Airplane’s White Rabbit].

I was supposed to upload their debut album only to find out that I left it at my sister’s house where most of my records are. Good thing Punk Not Profit blog posted that record, So, just click HERE to redirect you to that excellent blog for the Damned Damned Damned album.

Enjoy!

Upon reading the text again, it actually sounded like you’re right. But you're not. Personally, I don’t include cover songs as a gauge for the “greatness” of any albums. (Though I sometimes measure the “coolness” of the band from their cover songs, but that’s just me) That’s why I lumped the covers in a group - in closed parenthesis, NOT in the same manner as I mentioned their original compositions like Love Song, etc. Because if anyone would measure the merits of any record for their cover songs, 95% of the artists would release 1 to 2 original songs and fill them up with covers and their albums would be “great.” But that’s just wrong. That’s why I put them in parenthesis, because these covers don’t count. But I got to mention them, especially “Looking At You,” since the band love this song so much, they almost always play them live. And one blogger even claimed (jokingly, of course) that they “made this song their own.”

Perhaps, I should have stated this in the text that covers don't count that much in the "greatest albums" category, but I assumed that everybody knows this already.

When I read back the text, I also discovered that I made a boo-boo – “… boasts some of the Damned best songs ever.” It should read “… the Damned’s best songs…” I’m sure I made a lot of grammatical mistakes/typos in my previous posts because I don’t read them again. Sorry.

Lastly, it is clearly stated in the back cover ”… plus four single tracks which did not appear on the original album.” Plus, I got the original vinyl, so I know the original tracklist, hence I know my "so-called" facts.

That's a pretty arbitrary way to judge something (an album, in this case). A work of art (for want of a better term) should be judged in it's totality. In the case of a record, it is irrelevant whether it has zero - or ten - cover versions. What matters is if it's any good.

Arbitrary? Yes it is. There are lots of people who find my taste for music very objectionable and repulsive. Case in point - Extreme Noise Terror, Impetigo, the Accused, etc. So being arbitrary or having individual judgment/opinion on musical matters is pretty much a part of me. I’m not saying I’m being snotty or brat about it and force people to see things my way, but yes, I certainly have my views on these matters. All I’m saying is what works for me might not work for others and my opinion might differ from others. I see things differently, and you? Probably different too.

The problem is we’re talking about two different things. You’re talking about a “great” album, but I’m talking about “great album/s of a particular artist,” in this case the Damned. These are two different things. It might sound the same but if you look closely it’s not. They’re just not the same. You can say otherwise but you’re not gonna convince me.

Regarding an artist’s best/great album/s, my view on it is that I can’t judge an artist’s album on cover songs but only their actual work. So I limit myself in the artist’s own compositions in judging their albums, because a cover song is simply not theirs (whether it’s a true blue cover or a complete overhaul of the original). That’s the way I see it, take it or leave it.

You can have a great album even it if is just 1 or 2 originals and as you succinctly put it, 10 covers. I can agree with you on that, only because of the strength of the individual songs (both originals and covers). But as a great album for that particular band? I don’t think so! Why? Their actual input, in terms of song writing on that album, is very minimal. And in my book, that counts a lot. Song writing matters!

Undisputed Attitude is a great album, I love it! But I’m not going to considerer it as one of the best Slayer albums because it only has one original song in it. See the difference?

Don’t get me wrong, I love covers. As I said before, I sometimes measure the “coolness” of the band on the songs they covered. Because it gives you the glimpse, firsthand, what the band was all about. Their beginnings, influences, etc.

You can accept the fact that I see things differently from yours or you’re gonna be an ass about it and force to me see things your way. But there’s no force on this planet to change the way I see things.

After pollination, your hoodia plant will form seedpods that look like small antelope horns. Pure Hoodia Gordonii has more exciting news to give. In conclusion, to those who are interested in trying to lose weight with hoodia weight loss pills, buy genuine hoodia gordonii from a reputable company that sells other health supplements or herbs and openly displays their return policy in writing. products containing Hoodia only claim Hoodia is only an appetite Yet, people who have adverse reactions to gelatin capsules can still use the product.

First of all I want to say excellent blog!
I had a quick question in which I'd like to ask if you do not mind. I was curious to know how you center yourself and clear your mind before writing. I have had trouble clearing my thoughts in getting my thoughts out. I do enjoy writing but it just seems like the first 10 to 15 minutes are generally wasted simply just trying to figure out how to begin. Any ideas or hints? Appreciate it!
